My favorite blues pianist is back with a blast!

The last time I saw Bill was in JZ Club in Hangzhou about 6 months ago. I regret I never had the chance to really talk to him in depth about some musical rantings and sarcasm that I used have on his backyard outside his residence in Bethesda, MD. Not to mention the endless gigs I had with Bill in the US Post Office and BMW conventions in Maryland. We've been through so much. He taught me everything about the blues.

Unfortunately, in JZ Club, he was playing on his Nord (usually his shining instrument) with nice drummer Al Gordon and one of my favorite saxophonists Lyle Link. But the BA singer really stinked and I was quite overthrown by her starting to sing James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Temptations tunes, albeit not up to standard. I was thinking to myself, did I come to Hangzhou for this? I came to Hangzhou wanting to hear some swinging vicious blues by Bill Heid. I did manage to sit in with the band, but the vibe just wasn't there, and it had a lot to do with the tasteless Hangzhou crowds who went to JZ to have pseudo-intellectual conversations amongst themselves instead of giving respect to the wonderful musicians (minus one) up there on the stage.

Despite all this, when I saw that Bill Heid had a new release out, I was more than thrilled. In HK, I haven't played this kind of blues for a very long time. This is the blues I grew up listening to and loving, but very few pianists in HK can carry the zest (Jezrael and Jason Cheng being the exceptional cases). Check out the reviews from Downbeat Magazine:-

Check out the reviews on In a Blue Mood and Blues Blast Magazine.

Check out the mp3s.

Needless to say, Bill Heid is back and stronger than ever! This inspires me to play the blues the way it is supposed to play.

All I can say is, I'm back too! Deep down inside, I'm a bluesman, and Bill Heid certainly made me realize that!

You dig!

Henry Chung

Roger Chung

Roger、Eternity Girls

Where do the children play?

Wow, what a night!

Saturday night at the Fringe Club with Bill Heid, Edward Chun, Ram Cheung, Koya Hisakazu and Jimi S. Galvea was some of the best blues I've ever played or heard in HK. For those who missed the gig, you'd have to wait until Bill next rolls into town. I anticipate that time to come soon.

Now, some YouTube clips of Bill for you thirsty fans:

I sense hope lately....

Wow...what a gig! Last night was the most satisfying gig since my return to HK. The reason was simple: Bill Heid was part of it. I haven't played with Bill for a very, very long time. And it was almost Kafkaseque that he was in HK. Saw him outside my church Sunday afternoon and we went to this park and sat down and talked about old times....yes, the old times....

We talked about everything from the weird joints in DC we used to play in and midgets we used to play with. Bill has a photographic memory. He remembers all the midgets we played with at all these weird joints. We would play at weird places in NE DC, Maple Lawn MD, La Plata MD, and even at a BMW annual convention. Those days were good...almost too good to be true.

Musically, Bill was my mentor and he opened me up to all types of blues and introduced me to the post-war blues sounds of the 50's. I learned all my blues vocabulary and licks from endlessly watching Bill play and sitting in with him at "Tabliban" every Monday night and ended up working some "memorable" gigs with him at the Blues Alley and with the Bob Margolin Allstars. What a trip it was! And I got there. I'm sure Bill appreciated it too. We were a team. We even played piano/harmonica duo at the Post Office Pavillion on some Saturday afternoons. I know what Bill is going to play next before he plays it, and it is that anticipation that makes our gigs great experiences.

Last night, the magic worked again, after many months of "Heidless" performances, I went back to my peak musically. The band sounded good too: Joel, Ah Hong, and Ram played well together. It makes me realize how important it is to play with those who are better than you. In this case, do try to sit in with as many masters as possible, cuz there ain't many left these days.

The hope thing continues. I loved "Juno." Adored it. There was a smile on my face when I left the theatre. There is hope! It reminded me of my high school days when everything just seemed so carefree. And it was just brilliant. You can't beat youth, so enjoy it while you can. I live like a teenager every day and it makes me happy.

I'm now listening to the "Juno" soundtrack non-stop. It's the best folk soundtrack since "Rushmore." After I listened to this tune in the theatre, I had tears in my eyes:

I was a featured guest on RTHK Radio 3 today!

What a surreal day!

I was featured LIVE on RTHK Radio 3 on the "Morning Brew" show with Phil Whelan. Please check out the clip from the archive. Second segment, start time 7:38, end time 24:57. So enjoy!

The interview was part of the promotion of the Grappa's gig tomorrow. I talked about my struggle as a blues artist in the USA, the rise of the Clarence Turner band, pianist Bill Heid, harpist William Tang, and my idiosyncratic view of the live music business in HK. Phil was a terrific guy, and I'd like to thank Rhys Adams for setting me with the interview.

Then I went for a job interview, a visit at the dentist's office (cf. Long John Blues), the pre-study of my Sunday Bible class. I'm home now!

So come see me at Grappas tomorrow if you love me.
